Whale Washes Up on Long Beach Shore
A whale carcass washed up on Long Beach shore this morning.
Monday, Dec. 30th, a whale carcass washed up amidst high offshore winds at Roosevelt Beach. It looked to me to be a 20' long Humpback.
I saw no evidence of propeller cuts, but there could be some on the back or bottom.
I spoke with Officer Jacobs of LBPD, who told me they were waiting for Marine Conservation to arrive to determine the next step in dealing with the carcass.

In past circumstances, carcasses have been cut up, moved, or buried on the beach. If there is a delay, the carcass will be covered with sand until disposition.
It's sad to see yet another whale dead on our shore.

Update: At about 3:30 PM this afternoon, the remains of our fellow mammal were put to rest in a burial at Roosevelt Beach. I added photos but eliminated the grizzly shots.
As I said, it was a sad day for us in Long Beach. We love seeing our whales lunging, breaching, and living amidst us. But it's a fact of life we must endure; what we love is with us so tenuously. All we can do is appreciate what and who we love while we can.
Be well,
