New York State Mentoring Program
Operating out of the state Office of Children and Family Services, the New York State Mentoring Program (NYSMP) provides mentors for students identified as at risk for dropping out of school. Originally established in 1984 by former New York State First Lady Matilda Raffa Cuomo, NYSMP was relaunched in 2015 by her son, Governor Andrew Cuomo. Today, Mrs. Cuomo serves as pro bono chair of the revitalized initiative. The mission of the program is to establish positive and supportive mentor relationships with a statewide, school-based, unique one-to-one approach aimed at New York State’s most at-risk youth.

NYSMP leverages the resources of communities, schools and businesses to match youth with screened and trained volunteer mentors. Dedicated adults guide youth in building positive relationships, developing self-esteem, and making positive life choices. The program is free to partners, including schools, organizations and volunteers.
We look forward to meeting you and getting you started on your journey as a Mentor!
