The Salvation Army Hempstead Community Center Helps 145 Local Children Prepare for the New School Year
Annual back-to-school event provided children with backpacks and essential school supplies while bringing local families together
HEMPSTEAD, NY - With the start of the school year, The Salvation Army Hempstead Community Center is helping local Long Island families prepare for a successful start to the school year with a back-to-school backpack and school supplies distribution event.
The event took place on August 29 at 65 Atlantic Avenue, Hempstead, NY 11550, and benefited 145 local children. The annual event is designed to help ease some of the financial pressure families face when preparing for the start of a new school year. Each backpack is filled with essential school supplies, including binders, notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, crayons, colored pencils, hand sanitizer, and other classroom necessities. For many families, the cost of back-to-school shopping can quickly add up. By providing backpacks filled with essential supplies, The Salvation Army hopes to ensure that local children have the tools they need to walk into their classrooms feeling prepared, confident, and ready to learn.
“Back-to-school season should be an exciting time for children and families, but for many households, the cost of school supplies can create an additional financial burden,” said Major Silvia, leader of the Salvation Army Hempstead Community Center. “Through this event, we are proud to support local families and make sure children in our community have the supplies they need to begin the school year with confidence.”

In addition to the backpack and school supply distribution, families were able to enjoy food, games and other activities, creating a welcoming and uplifting environment for children and their families.
