Lynbrook Celebrates Dr. Seuss' Birthday

Young readers commemorate Read Across America Day.

Throughout the Lynbrook Public Schools’ elementary buildings and Kindergarten Center, Read Across America Day was observed on the March 2 birthdate of Dr. Seuss.

The National Education Association, which sponsors the nationwide celebration of reading, named this year’s theme after the honored author’s book, “Oh the Places You’ll Go.” Each of the schools held lessons based on this theme and encouraged students to think about their aspirations for the future.

At the Kindergarten Center, Lisa Nulty’s class decorated paper hot air balloons on which they wrote about where they would choose to travel in the apparatus.

Waverly Park Elementary School reading specialist Maria Viviano created a wall display of book covers. On Read Across America Day, she read a poem during morning announcements, and students recited a “Reader’s Oath.”

West End Elementary School teacher Kathlyn Passalacqua led a reading activity in which students collaborated in groups to determine the themes of several Dr. Seuss books. Decorative truffula trees from the book “The Lorax” and figures representing various Dr. Seuss characters provided a festive atmosphere.

Marion Street Elementary School students were encouraged to dress in the attire of their dream careers for a special assembly focusing on the day’s theme. They viewed and listened to a video reading of “Oh the Places You’ll Go,” and were also excited to discover that the Grinch was the winner of a school-wide vote for students’ favorite Dr. Seuss character. Prior to the assembly, classes discussed the meanings of several inspiring quotes for which the famous author is known.
