MASSAPEQUA, NY — Carvel ice cream is offering a special deal on its trademark “flying saucer” sandwich Friday to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the sandwich’s 1951 introduction.

The ice cream giant announced that flying saucers would be available for just 75 cents Friday, all day, at shops in Coney Island, Massapequa and West Palm Beach, FL. According to Carvel, the saucer was introduced by Tom Carvel in 1951, sandwiching soft serve ice cream between two chocolate wafer cookies. The name, the ice cream chain said, came from the popularity of UFOs in America at the time.

“For 75 years, the Flying Saucer has brought generations of fans together over something joyful and delicious,” Carvel Vice President of Marketing Marissa Sharpless said. “From Tom Carvel’s first roadside stand in 1934 to the creation of the Flying Saucer during the 1950s UFO craze, our brand has always embraced a spirit of imagination and fun. This crash landing is our way of celebrating that legacy and the joy of play that has always been at the heart of Carvel.”
