Almsgiving

When my children were younger, we were forever involved in volunteer activities that were spurred by mandatory college prerequisites, religious education, and Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Never a still moment!

I vividly recall spending an inordinate amount of time traveling in my vehicle, usually with my children’s friends who were also seeking these worthwhile avenues, to and from these specified requirements encompassing fund raising for charities and well-meaning organizations, collecting prescribed items for specific groups, food kitchens and pantries, nursing homes, youth organizations and groups, hosting Stations of the Cross, neighborhood and beach clean-ups, and many more.

When one is that busy, the mind can become overwhelmed by a barrage of warp speed events, and it is therefore essential to assist the brain to be fully engaged with each individual task enabling it to recalibrate to a more efficient and humane directive and dialogue.

Left idle or juggling too much, the brain will assuredly succumb to wandering.

What better way to keep it stationary and centered than by helping others this Lent?

Unsure where to begin?

Why not start at home, locally, or at your parish?

Cook a heartfelt meal for someone or go grocery shopping for them.

Visit someone who is homebound with lively conversation, necessary or fun supplies, or a delicious treat.

Your action does not have to be momentous; it only needs to be.

God calls in all sorts of ways, and some may take you by surprise.

Movement, change, and interaction are the rhythms of life.

Maybe you are at a crossroads and unsure where to devote your time and effort.

Almsgiving is the animated practice of Lent as it requires action, and if nothing jumps out at you, pray.

Through prayer, our questions are answered, anxieties are quelled, and creativity is sparked.

Since we are each uniquely gifted beings, we will be called to divergent paths.

Perhaps you already feel something stirring and nudging you.

Go with it.

Maybe you have a friend who is lonely and would love to join you on your new excursion.

Look at that, you have already helped someone.

We are now Jesus’ hands, feet, and heart.

Let’s put them to good use.

You don’t have to save the world, but you may find that your goodwill rescues are loaded with saving graces.
