October is home to an array of mental health procurements intended to accomplish exactly that: mental illness awareness for the first week, obsessive compulsive disorder for the second, national health education week for the third, with national depression screening day highlighted on the 8th, and world mental health day exuberantly bouncing in on the 10th.

With so much attention generated and focused on mental health and all its adjuncts for decades, it is baffling that little has altered its tainted repudiated perception.

This negligent reluctance is rigid-minded and pervasive, seeping into all racial and socio-economic groups, impeding the overriding cultural, social, personal stigmas, and outdated falsehoods that securely shackle the accused in a wooden pillory from yesteryear to endure public scrutiny and ridicule.

These hurtful and erroneous misconceptions hinder the flow of positivity and kindness, and unfairly categorize the afflicted as weak, unconcerned, lazy, and lacking will power.

With such condemning and branding allegations, is it any wonder that those suffering may have a defeatist posture and are unable to move forward?

These disparaging and penalizing opinions and terms are fatalistic discouraging notions that either victimize the person or hold them accountable for symptoms and illnesses beyond their control.

Instead of decoding the medical and psychiatric mysteries surrounding mental illness, society chooses to be lax on compassion and empathy and overabundantly harsh with slurs, rejection, and derelictions.

We are at the crossroads today with many facets of humanity.

Turning a blind eye and alienating ‘different’ or what we do not understand has imprisoned us in our own languishment and confining bed of horrors.

Liberation is on the horizon.
