Butterflies, Bats, and Bees… Oh My!

What do they have in common? They are essential pollinators, and are in severe decline worldwide.

The culprit? Man.

Delicate Monarchs are on the precipice of extinction with an alarming drop of over 90 percent, and bee colonies have been suffering from Colony Collapse Disorder for over a decade, which has depleted and further jeopardized hives, rendered the queen bee neglected and defenseless, with worker bees in short supply, and unable to secure one of their many roles of producing a secretion that keeps harmful pathogens out of the their hive.

It is amazing and disturbing how a single action can cause a deleterious domino effect that can impact endless ecosystems. Habitat loss, and the destruction of the precious plants that they feed upon has left the Monarchs unsupported. Milkweed, their only food source, grows naturally in prairies, which are cleared and plowed for monoculture vegetation, depleting the soil, decreasing healthy microorganisms, and encouraging super-weeds.

How is man orchestrating such apocalyptic transgressions? Enter pesticides of all kinds that systematically decimate everything in their path, and further pillage the intricately balanced microbiomes in the dirt, that nourish and enhance humanity’s food.

Some of these pesticides corrupt the whole plant creating a pesticide generating product, and the tainted pollen adheres to the bees while they forage, accumulating in the hive, and dwindling the bee population.

Native milkweed flower nectar and leaves are the only source Monarch caterpillars eat, and pollinate it providing for future generations of Monarchs, who also pollinate the food humans ingest. These unique plants are the only place that Monarchs will lay their eggs so larvae can easily feed.

While many may consider them creepy, and maybe even a threat, when left in their environment and free from manipulation, one bat can eat six hundred to a thousand mosquitoes in an hour keeping the insect population in check, decreasing crop failure, economic damage, and human illness.

These faithful pollinators pack a big punch for regenerative farming that cannot be ignored or indiscriminately destroyed. You can make the all-important difference by being an informed activist for those who cannot advocate for themselves. You can be their hero – Oh my!
