Car Slams Into Telephone Pole On Merrick Road

Two occupants rescued by Massapequa Fire Department; both said to be in stable condition.

A passenger sedan crashed into a telephone pole on Merrick Road early Wednesday evening, closing down traffic in the eastbound lane, authorities said.

Nassau County police and Massapequa firefighters rushed to rescue the two trapped occupants.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Hicksville and Merrick Road, right in front of . The car, a late-model Mitsubishi, had to be cut open by firefighters with the hydraulic "Jaws of Life" device in order to extract the two passengers inside.

The two passengers were rushed to a local area hospital in seperate ambulances. Police at the scene said both were in stable condition and were expected to recover.

Police said they are investigating the possiblity that a second car may have been involved with the accident, but for now are uncertain as to what caused the crash.
