Teen Dies After Being Struck By LIRR Train Monday Afternoon: MTAPD

LONG ISLAND, NY — A 17-year-old girl died after being struck by a Long Island Rail Road train at the Massapequa station Monday, the MTA Police Department said.

The incident took place at about 2:33 p.m. when Long Island Rail Road train 163 with scheduled service from Babylon to Penn Station struck the teen, who was not authorized to be on the tracks at the Massapequa station, the MTAPD said.

There were no injuries to the train crew or passengers, the MTAPD said.

A preliminary investigation, which included video review and witness statements, revealed that no criminality is suspected; the investigation is ongoing, the MTAPD said.

The teen was pronounced deceased at the scene by Nassau County EMTs at 2:55 p.m, the MTAPD said.

The Nassau County Police Department assisted with the MTAPD response.

The girl was from Massapequa, the MTAPD said.

The train, with about 150 passengers onboard, was safely detrained at Massapequa, the MTAPD said.

According to the MTA Long Island Rail Road, there were delays of 10 to 20 minutes in both directions on the Babylon branch after a train struck the teen on the track at Massapequa.

Eastbound

The 3:17 p.m. train from Penn Station to Babylon was operating 15 to 20 minutes late.

The 3:45 p.m. train from Penn Station to Massapequa was operating 10 to 15 minutes late.

Westbound

The 3:43 p.m. train from Babylon to Penn Station was operating 15 to 20 minutes late.
