I've noticed lately that there has been a rise in Pit bull misconceptions, pinpointing stories where the dog is "at fault" simply because of its breed. The true crime here is the misunderstanding and lack of education that people have about this glorious breed. In fact, it's common misconceptions like "Pits are bred to fight, or Pits will turn on their owners" that contribute to their overpopulation in local our shelters.
But what few people realize is that Pits are one of the most reliable, loyal and family friendly dogs on the planet. In fact, it's very common for Pits to be trained as rescue canine or as therapy dogs because they are deemed one of the more intelligent and well-tempered types of dogs. Fun Fact: Pit Bulls score an 83.4% passing rate with the American Temperament Test Society. That's better than the popular Border Collie..(a breed who scores 79.6%).
With that said, please consider opening your hearts and your homes to one of the wonderful Pit/Pit Mixes available at our local shelters. Here are a few, along with other super breeds, that can't wait find their forever homes...
Please allow me to introduce you to Acis, Milo, Sully, Nikki, and Owen.
Waiting for their forever home at the TOH Animal Shelter is this cool dude named Acis. Acis is an awesome pooch who is great with older kids and tolerates all handling. He is happy to share his food, treats and toys. If that's not cool enough, he's up to date on all vaccinations, heart worm negative and vet checked. Acis will be given a microchip and altered prior to adoption. Acis is looking for love...might you be his love match?
Also at the TOH Shelter is Milo. Milo was originally found by his owner as a stray on the streets. She brought him home to live with her for about 4 months, until the current landlord insisted that Milo had to go in April 2014. This handsome grey bully mix was described by his former owner as friendly to all, playful and energetic. Milo is vet checked, heartworm negative, up to date on all vaccinations and will be altered and given a microchip before heading home for good this time. It's so unfair that a young dog like this has been moved from place to place through no fault of his own. A perfect family dog for kids ages 10 years and up...won't you consider giving Milo the forever home and family that he craves?

Now "The Three Amigo's" as their known as at the Babylon Town Shelter, 51 Lamar St.W. Babylon 11704 consists of some of the best Pits you'll ever meet: Sully, Nikki and Owen.
Sully is an active boy who will do anything to have you play fetch with him! He LOVES, LOVES, LOVES his tennis balls!! He will dive in a kiddie pool for one, jump up high to catch one mid air, or even toss one around the yard happily keeping himself occupied!! Although he can keep himself happy playing all by himself, he does enjoy the company of some furry companions.Sully is a happy and obedient boy who would love a big yard and someone who enjoys going for walks as much as he does! He is very smart and just as loving; he can’t wait to share all he has to offer with a family of his own.
Want to meet a real life beauty queen? Nikki won the title of Miss Congeniality at a recent Hecksher Park adoption event and I sure do know why! She's a beautiful sweet girl who loves attention almost as much as she adores belly rubs. Nikki is the type of dog you need to meet- Nikki does much better outside of her cage, so please ask the staff to bring her out when your introduced. What a doll!
And last but certainly not least is Owen. Owen has a special story- He was adopted last September but when he new family was evicted from their home, he wound up back at the shelter. Owen is described as sweet, gentle, and very intelligent- scored very high marks on his training and does great at adoption events. For more information on Sully, Nikki, Owen and other great animals available for adoption at the Babylon Town Shelter, visit or check them out on the web- they have many of their residents on Petfinder: https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?status=A&shelterid=NY275
