Finn's Deli Bets on Quality Food

Mike DiDomenico brings his deli business to Massapequa

Mike DiDomenico just wants to find a deli where the staff is friendly, the prices are reasonable and the food is excellent. “I just wanted to have a place where you can go and the food is really good. People just like really good food.”

DiDomenico is the co-owner of 4646 Merrick Road, Massapequa, but he's been in the deli business for over ten years. Even though the economy is almost at a crisis state, DiDomenico said he was not afraid to venture out and open a new start-up business to capitalize on the need for a fresh new deli in the neighborhood.  “With more and more 7-Elevens popping up here and trying to serve [sandwiches] and stuff like that, there is a lack of good delis [around] here. I want to be able to come to work and like the food myself.”

“We also want to be known for awesome catering at reasonable prices.”

DiDomenico also co-owns John Moore’s Deli in Bellmore with business partner and childhood friend Matt Moore.  He said the two have worked in the deli business at least on a part time basis since his college days at Hofstra.

“It’s definitely a joint effort for us to run both place. But so far, everyone’s been raving about the deli since the renovations. We have great cold cuts and quality salads. Everything on the menu is ours and we want to add some hot dishes soon. We do everything here and we want to do everything better.”

Finn’s Deli started a massive remodeling project Jul. 1 that lasted around Aug. 27, the day of Hurricane Irene.  “It was pretty scary during that time,” he said. “We didn’t know what was going to happen.”

Finn’s Deli officially celebrated its grand opening Oct. 14 with a ribbon cutting ceremony that included his seven person staff and about 20 customers. “Everybody has been raving since the renovation,” he explained. “The [business] on the weekends is great. During the summertime, people come here before they go to their baseball games. Like I said, it’s been great.”

With the plans to include various homemade hot dishes on the menu, DiDomenico said he also plans to include several promotional incentives in order to drive traffic into his deli. “We’re going to have coupons, square deal promos, buy one egg sandwich, get one free. Stuff like that.”

“We just need people to see the place,” he said “Massapequa is a great place, great location. We just have to get the word out.”
