He Nailed It

Michelangelo’s Pieta is a masterpiece that depicts the previous suffering of our Lord who now lies lifeless in His Mother’s loving arms. Unbearable and unthinkable pain, passionate emotion, and collective gratitude are ensconced in that mighty slab of stone despite its cold, hard, and inanimate characteristics. How can this congealed metamorphosed rock exude so much anguish, truth, and hope? Even though it is a structured symbol of an artist’s handiwork created with amateur tools, it allows all that occurred to infuse endless possibilities that can still evolve today because of what one man sacrificed. Yes, He is God, but He hung on the Cross and died very human.

How about You? What are you whipping up with your humanness? Now is not the time to sidestep or second guess. We must remain faithful, and listen to what The Almighty is asking of us. Jesus did this knowing the agony and torment that was speeding His way. He could have avoided it by fleeing, or denying who He was, but He didn’t.

Michelangelo was not easily dissuaded either. Because he was poor, he could only obtain a rejected block of Carrara marble, which he dragged home to commission at the cardinal’s request. Ironically, Jesus was rejected too. The tossed aside marble and Jesus both became renown, timeless, living testimonials that articulate the magnitude of persistence, obedience, and God’s Will. Cold hard stone meets warm supple flesh in a fashion that generates the unfolding of God’s plan literally and analogously.

Jesus is the Cornerstone of Christianity, and both He and the Pieta are shining examples of God’s grace in motion.The cool, crystallized rock forever encapsulates His selfless Passion, sacrifice, and death. Through Christ’s suffering and indivisibility upon the Cross, proof of God’s love and fulfillment of His promise are exposed for us. Jesus showed the world by doing exactly what The Father asked of Him – He nailed it.

John 19:18, “There they crucified him, and with him two others - one on each side and Jesus in the middle.”
