
We seldom argued, but that didn’t mean we didn’t sometimes disagree.
Fortunately, those moments fell into the realm of minutia. One, however, that has come to mind recently, was my lack of interest in history.

Yet, he always loved the topic and never could understand my lack of enthusiasm whenever the subject arose.
Today, as always, I thought about him and wondered if he would smile now when I quote from historical sources.

The oft quoted words, “Divide and Conquer” have been widely attributed to Phillip II of Macedon. However, they were also utilized by Julius Caesar as well as the well known Emperor Napoleon.
I must confess I was unaware of that with the exception of Julius Caesar. Obviously, that was due to the three obligatory years of Latin I once endured in High School.
While I also must admit until recently, I didn’t have a clue who Phillip II was, I do now agree wholeheartedly with the wisdom of his three quoted words.
In today’s political climate, I wonder perhaps if there is now another student of history who is utilizing the wisdom of that long ago advice to justify current initiatives.
It certainly worked in time long gone by, and perhaps more of us should reread our history books.
And in the comfort of another world, I know my beloved is saying, “I told you so,” and laughing.
