If and

Why

“Do as you are told”

Did you hear that phrase as often as I did?

Probably not, unless we share the same vintage.

Since I was the oldest, and certainly not the wisest in our family, I listened to the edict more than either of my two younger siblings,

And absorb it, I did until I reached the age of being self supporting (on a poverty level.)

It was then I was finally able to recognize the element of choice over my body, my heart and primarily, my soul.

This Sunday morning has been a bit different for me. Because of a significant snow storm embracing our small town, Will will not visit. His Father made a wise choice,in my humble opinion, due to the icy roads as yet uncleared on this December Sabbath.

Consequently, I have lingered not only over my mug of Jamaican Blue Coffee, but also spent a significant portion of my morning rereading news of “The week that was,”

Then sifting into the quiet of my being, I believed once again I heard the memorable quote from my Mother.

‘Do as you are told.”

Only this time the edict seemed to emerge not from a loving parent, but a stern government,

Now reverting to childhood insolence, I must use the three word question that always got me into trouble,

“Why?”

Today’s inquiry; does not verge on choices of clothing or food or questionable friendships, yet it is not very different from my reaction in youth

So I again question ‘Why,”

Since legally my body is my own, I have freedom of choice regarding reproduction. As a life long (and undeniable aged) Catholic, I have had no need to utilize the current law. However, I have also embraced the philosophy of freedom of choice. A woman’s body is her own is my belief.

Yet

In today’s political climate once again I must use the word “Why.”

Accepting the philosophy that my body is my own, how then does the State have the right to mandate what I allow into it, i.e. vaccines, boosters or infusions?

Is there any difference?

Once again, the word “why” seems appropriate.

Perhaps it should also be used by others since it does pertain to life and death.
