Life Isn't Easy

But it can be great fun!

Like many other Americans last week, I faced a choice.  Even with the luxury of my reliable DVR, it was a difficult decision.  Should I abandon Downtown Abbey and Grafton for the star studded Academy Awards and miss the next to last chapter in the lives of our English cousins.

Oh, I know, I can always record the episodes, but I look forward with such anticipation to my weekly visit with the Crawley family, I decided to watch it and tape the awards.

So it wasn’t until later in the week that I watched some of the famed Red Carpet interviews.  The one that caught my attention was with the diminutive well known actress so exquisitely coiffed and elegantly gowned as she whined, “It‘s hard being a woman.”

What?  Oh, my dear, please!

Many, many years ago, long before the famed actress’ time, there was a wonderful song called, “I Enjoy Being A Girl.,”  It was featured in “The Flower Drum Song,” and I don’t recall any protests, demonstrations, only appreciation by most of my peers.

Of course, it’s hard being a woman, but isn’t it equally difficult being a man?  Life isn’t easy, something we learn to accept relatively early in adolescence.  But being a woman can be delightful if you look around our wonderful world, and accept the fact that each phase of life for both sexes holds both triumphs and traumas.  Until relatively recently, only men were called on to defend their nation when the call to war was heard.  And yes, it is true, only women suffer the pain of childbirth. But each sex has its compensations, and while so many of the lyrics in “I Enjoy Being A Girl” are dated, some remain quite true for me.

I do adore being dressed in something frilly, well, maybe not frilly, but something that makes me look attractive.

When I have a brand new hairdo, I am rejuvenated.

Men no longer say I’m cute or funny, nor would I want them to, but when an unexpected compliment comes my way, indeed it makes my day.

I flip when a fellow sends me flowers, and to be totally honest, anytime anyone sends me flowers.

I was always a female female who fortunately, was blessed to find a brave and true man in her future.

My days of being a girl have long since gone, but the step upward to being a woman was one of the most miraculous moments of my life, and I do hope one day the inordinately successful actress finds some joy in her own role in life.
