Massapequa Jr/Sr PTSA/MTAC Program: Dangers of E-cigs/Vaping

Collaboration to Reduce Substance Misuse

Parents and residents are invited to an E-Cigarette and Vaping Prevention Program on Wednesday, November 28th at 7:30 p.m. in Massapequa High School’s Little Theater following the monthly Massapequa Jr/Sr PTSA meeting. The program, E-cigs & Vaping: A Danger to Youth, is hosted by the PTSA and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) and will outline why e-cigarettes and vaping are popular with today's youth and how it presents health issues for their future. The engaging and informative presentation will be led by Pamela Mizzi, MS, LMHC, CASAC 2 with Q & A to follow the presentation.

Research and experts indicate e-cigarettes and vaping products are dangerous for youth. Besides nicotine, e-cigarettes can contain harmful ingredients including: ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs; flavorants such as diacetyl, a chemical linked to serious lung disease; volatile organic compounds; and heavy metals, such as nickel, tin, and lead (US Surgeon General). Between 2011 and 2017, e-cigarette use significantly increased among youth in high school and middle school (Truth Initiative). According to the 2017 National Youth Tobacco Survey, over 1.7 million high school students and 390,000 middle school students currently use e-cigarettes (Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids). Research continues to show that using e-cigarettes increases the likelihood of smoking cigarettes (Nicotine & Tobacco Research, 2018, 1–9).
