Massapequa Patch talks Frozen Yogurt to keep you cool as summer approaches.

Now that the weather is getting warmer, many folks in the area are looking for something special to eat for desert. is part of the latest trend in after dinner treats,  featuring 16 premium flavors and eight swirled flavors of frozen yogurt. When you combine that with more than 45 toppings, you've got just about everything a sweet tooth could want. Patch sat down with Swirls and Twirls' Dana Simon, at their Massapequa Park location, to chat about the latest frozen yogurt craze in town.

How long has the Massapequa location of Swirls and Twirls been open?

What sets Swirls and Twirls apart from other frozen yogurt shops on Long Island?

Unlike the other frozen yogurt places on Long Island, we actually have a self-serve. So you can basically make the yogurt just the way you want it and that’s why everyone enjoys it. Kids really enjoy it because they don’t have to watch someone make their dessert, they can make it just how they want it.

Where are the other locations on Long Island?

Besides Massapequa, there are two other locations in West Islip and Patchogue.

What are some are the top selling yogurts?

Well Birthday Cake Batter is definitely our number one seller, but there’s also Southern Red Velvet, Sweet Cream and Caramel, Brooklyn Cheesecake. These are all very popular with customers but we try to change it up and give customers a variety of options so that the yogurt caters to everyone. All the yogurt is either non-fat, low-fat, most of the flavors are gluten-free, and we just added two new sugar-free flavors for the diabetics out there. We also have two non-dairy flavors out there for the lactose intolerant. We have a yogurt that caters to everyone.

What is the average price of a cup of frozen yogurt?

The average of yogurt is usually about $4. It’s all about how much the how much the dessert weighs. It also depends on how hungry you are. People fill up their cups with the yogurt and then toppings, so it depends how much yogurt they want versus how much toppings they want. Some people get more yogurts at times, some people prefer more toppings. It depends on what mood they are in. The yogurt is 49 cents an ounce, so once you fill up your cup with what you want, then you come up here and we weigh it and let you know how much it’s going to cost you.

Now that the weather has been warmer, have you seen an increase in business?

Absolutely. I mean we’ve always been very busy even in the winter, but it’s been a constant flow ever since the weather has been warmer.  It's definitely been busier with the weather improving.
