Massapequa Officials: Path Between Unqua, Berner is Hazardous

A path between Berner Middle School and Unqua Elementary School has become a hazard and Massapequa School officials are taking steps to fix it.

In a letter to district residents, Superintendent Lucille Iconis said a pathway known as the “Unqua/Berner path” has come to the attention of school security staff.

“[Staff] have observed and reported illegal activities occurring on the ‘path’ by adults and adolescents who are not Massapequa students,” said Iconis. Those activities, which have included substance abuse, were immediately reported to Nassau County Police as they happened, she said.

Furthermore, the path, which borders the Phillips Shopping Center on Sunrise Highway, is hidden by an eight-foot-wall that was erected per a mandate from the Town of Oyster Bay, said Iconis.

To end any hidden actvity, Iconis suggested the wall be torn down and relocated. She also suggested that the concrete bridge that connects the path to Berner Middle School be removed and that the area be fenced off to prevent any unauthorized adults from getting onto the property.

The Massapequa Board of Education is welcoming public comments about the issue at Thursday’s meeting.
