Massapequa Teen Is Battling Rare Form Of Cancer

Her family created a fundraiser to help pay for the costs of her treatment and care. Here's how you can help them.

A Massapequa teenager is battling a rare form of cancer, and her family has reached out to the community for help and support.

Lexi Shaw, a 14-year-old who just finished her freshman year of high school, was diagnosed in May with Ewing Sarcoma of the kidney -- a rare form of cancer that required her to have her left kidney removed. Ewing Sarcoma mainly affects children ages 6 to 18, and there are only about 1,000 reported cases a year, making it extremely rare.

Before she can begin months of chemotherapy, Lexi underwent fertility treatments, which will allow her to have children in the future, if she so chooses. Those treatments were completed, and two weeks ago, Lexi began her 10-month-long chemotherapy course. The treatment will force Lexi to miss her sophomore year of school.

In order to support their daughter, John and Debbie Shaw have decided that Debbie will take a leave of absence from work.

The Shaw family has already raised thousands of dollars, but every bit helps. You can donate by visiting the GoFundMe page that was created.
