Massapequa's Boys Scouts Teach Cub Scouts About Camping
Massapequa's Boys Scout Troop 660 helps Massapequa's Cub Scout Pack 696 learn about camping at the Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River.
Massapequa’s Boys Scout Troop 660 helped Massapequa’s Cub Scout Pack 696 learn about camping at the Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River.
The Scouts attended the annual Scout Camporee, a local competition where Scouts from neighboring troops demonstrate scouting skills to earn points towards first, second, or third place. Some of the skills tested were knot tying, fire starting, “iron chef” camp cooking, archery, and scout “Jeopardy”. Cub Scouts got to observe the events first-hand, and helped in some non-competition duties such as pitching tents and cooking lunch.
The John M. Schiff Scout Reservation is named after John M. Schiff, the son of Mortimer L. Schiff; both of whom were World Scout Committee members and notable early Boy Scouts of America (BSA) leaders. The reservation is operated by Theodore Roosevelt Council, BSA and located near Wading River, New York. The reservation comprises 400 acres camp located in the Long Island Pine Barrens and surrounds the 30 acre “Deep Pond”. Deep Pond is a kettle-hole lake formed during the last glacial age. It is 44 feet deep. Many scouting events are held there throughout the year.
