Masspequa Health Teacher Shares Success Story

Last year, a student from the high school attended one of the workshops and told her family about the importance of self-examinations.

From Massapequa School District: Denise Baldinger, the chairwoman of health education for the Massapequa School District, was a guest speaker at Maurer Foundation’s recent Pink Diamond Gala, which coincided with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Speakers from the Maurer Foundation visit ninth-grade health classes each year at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus and various classes at the main campus to provide breast cancer awareness workshops. Last year, a student from the high school attended one of the workshops and told her family about the
importance of self-examinations. The student’s aunt found a lump and was able to get treatment. During Ms. Baldinger’s presentation at the gala, “A Day in the
Classroom,” she spoke about how early detection helped save the life of someone in the community.

“I was proud to represent our district,” said Ms. Baldinger, who teaches health classes at Ames. “Through this partnership with the Maurer Foundation, we basically saved a woman’s life. We have a success story right here in Massapequa.”
