Nassau Woman Arrested As Part Of Elder Scam: Police

MASSAPEQUA, NY — An East Norwich woman was arrested on early Thursday for her role in a scam to defraud an elderly Massapequa woman out of thousands of dollars, Nassau County police said.

According to police, a 74-year-old Massapequa woman received a phone call on Jan. 21 from a man claiming to be her granddaughter's lawyer. The man said her granddaughter had been arrested and that he would send someone to her home to pick up $13,000 for bail. A man arrived at the home, and the woman gave him $13,000 in cash.

After taking the money, the woman was called again and was told that the bail had been increased, and that she needed to provide another $50,000. She told the caller she needed time to get the money from the bank. The woman realized she was the victim of a scam and called the police.

On Jan. 27, the man called the woman again and said he would send someone to her home to collect the $50,000. The woman called the police.

Kayla Roberts, 22, of Auburn Lane, East Norwich, arrived at 12:16 a.m. on Jan. 28 to collect the money, police said. When she arrived, she was placed under arrest without incident.

Roberts was charged with third-degree attempted grand larceny. She was issued an appearance ticket and is due back in court on April 29.
