Not Even the

I’ve never worn a diamond ring.

Despite the oft sung lyrics, “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, the esteemed jewels were never mine, by choice.

As a matter of fact, twice in my life I refused such a gift, both times from the only man I ever loved.

One long ago autumn in NY, I made an instant decision; either a lengthy engagement (with of course, the traditional solitaire) or the far better choice, to accompany him as his wife as he departed for a distant assignment.

I wisely chose the latter wearing the simple white gold band that has rarely left my finger.

I never regretted my decision.

The second time was years later when a significant anniversary of our marriage was being celebrated.

As he always did, my Anam Cara totally understood when I declined for the second time and requested instead the computer I desperately wanted.

However, as the years passed, and life seemed to move gently but constantly, I began to add a collection of simple bands to accompany the one worn on the third finger of my left hand.

When the time came, ever too soon, to say goodbye to the soul mate who brought me such joy, I had accumulated quite a collection of silver bands that I now wear constantly on my left hand.

On late summer afternoons when I am alone, and the sunlight descends in a sleek silver ribbon it seems to highlight not only the original band but also the matching collection of silver threads also worn on the same left hand.

The collection never fails to remind me of all the kindred souls who shared our life together supporting us with friendship, laughter and love during the 57 years we were granted..

I rather doubt if any sparkling solitaire could ever have had the unique meaning that the collection of simple silver bands holds for me.

Not even the fabled Hope Diamond!
