The Power Of

There are obvious limitations.

I would not nor could ever deny that.

However, there is something else,

a quality or ability I am unable to define with vocabulary.

And also, I now realize there was a commitment made fifteen years ago,

One I was not privy to nor did not comprehend at the time.

He was barely 15 that autumn. His father and he had flown east across our vast country in time for their final goodbye.

Our family feared introducing the young man to the ultimate end of life now facing his beloved pal

(his friend, the man who seemingly never saw a negative in his ability) would be traumatic

Grandpa Art was being called home by his Maker, and there would be no more dinners, quiet walks

or moments of mere silence shared with understanding,

No one was privy to the last conversation held in the quiet room,

and immersed in my own shroud of sadness,

I never thought too much about it.

Now fifteen years later as the now young adult and I share the seventh day of each week,

I begin to realize there was a promise made now being fulfilled.

The young boy made a commitment to “take care of another left behind.”

It was done without broadcast or ever acknowledged,

,but weekly it is fulfilled as we both age,

and I am filled with awe at the power of love.
