Why are there now REAL IDs?

The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 as a way to establish minimum security standards for state-issued IDs. The deadline of October 2020 was set by President Donald Trump's administration after the law was opposed by states under President George W. Bush and not enforced under President Barack Obama.
