Saint Blaise

Every year on February 3rd, come rain or shine or sick child in tow, I attend Mass for the feast of Saint Blaise to impart healing for my throat.

In my younger years, I experienced an onslaught of incessant sinus infections due to environmental toxins which paved a painful trail of sore throats before disseminating into my upper respiratory tract and protracting infirmity.

These mischievous microorganisms hijacked and altered my voice to a whispery coarse utterance that amused adults and frightened children.

Saint Blaise was a physician with amazing healing abilities that miraculously cured a boy from choking to death on a fishbone by commanding that he cough it up.

Later, he became a beloved elected Bishop in Armenia, and died a martyr because he would not renounce his faith to worship pagan idols.

He refused to use his voice to proclaim such an agonizing falsehood.

With this stance, his repudiation and silence spoke loudly and succinctly: My faith is mine; I believe even in the face of dire mortality.

The voice is powerful and can decimate or elevate.

You have a choice and responsibility with each word you pronounce.

Like most facets in life, we take our precious voices for granted assuming they will continually and uninterruptedly be heard and be able to project our thoughts, needs, beliefs, and concerns.

The voice emanates in the throat which is home to the industrious thyroid that regulates a windfall of metabolic activities and synergies.

This gland is also correlated to the metaphysical center in our spiritual energetic body called the throat chakra, which when functioning optimally ensures productive communication and creativity.

Any hindrance here, can manifest as speech disturbances, depression, anxiety, or self-esteem issues.

Saint Blaise is the protector against throat ailments, and is honored annually with the blessing of the throats as a sacramental in the Roman Catholic Church.

Saint Blaise’s prayer is recited by the Priest or Deacon with crossed candles at the throat symbolizing light and truth: Through the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from every disease of the throat and from every other illness. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy spirit.

The red ribbon securing the candles represents the blood of martyrs showcasing their devotion to Jesus, and the above prayerful words not only unburden us from sickness but also free us of anything that separates us from God. Amen.
