A Still Pool

Entering my swimming pool one evening, my youngest, Jack, automatically scurried to turn on the filtering system, which pulsates, swirls, and forcefully projects the water in an endless cascade.

I questioned what he was doing as the stream erupted into the flat water, disturbing its peaceful mode and further intruding the tranquility with audible splashing sounds. “You don’t want to go in a still pool,” he clarified.

“Yes, I do. I like seeing the bottom, and the light stretching out across the water. Otherwise, it is all blurred,” I retorted.

He incredulously scoffed, shook his head in bewilderment, and left the filter running with me engulfed in foamy bubbles.

This seismic pattern of cacophony and disorder is omnipresent nowadays, as it profusely distorts, distracts, and disavows reality, and has trained us that sitting still or tending to mindful intention and reflection are not the way.

These modern-day mantras purport: do ten things at once, add to the confusion, the more commotion the better, and chaos is good as it lends to the distraction that we seem to desperately crave and unapologetically assimilate into our lifestyle.

It’s analogous to the still pool water, which fosters clarity enabling one to view the dirt and debris that has gathered in areas, foreign objects that the wind gave a shove, and one’s feet and legs.

‘Look, but don’t see’ is a foreboding algorithm that has rewired our hard drive, and fallaciously left us accustomed to the ceaseless noise and motion that rocks our world.

Arduous avoidance of the underlying ugliness and tumult, accumulated from decades of hurts that is an inherent part of each of us, is a fool’s folly.

Stress, abuse, trauma, neglect, unresolved issues and feelings all whisper at each individual, and outline in a very real fashion how life is interpreted, attitude and mindset, coping, and proclivities for goals and failures.

Unrelentingly obscuring these nerve-racking blips of consciousness that will keep re-emerging, is a smoke screen boasting a misguided sense of security.

It intimates and substantiates: what we resist, persists. Disorder inhibits observing those internal tugs and distasteful emotions that we quickly submerge.

Abbreviate the madness, and tune into God.

Break the chaotic stipulations, and sit still. Communion with Him provides calmness, courage to tackle what we evade, and solutions.

One peaceful moment can provide many more.
