Street Fights

And Crossing the Street

I hate street fights.

I admit it has been a long time ago since they hovered on the perimeter of my world, but yet, their memory remains intact, strong and vivid and yes, ugly.

Street fights were not uncommon in Hell’s Kitchen. I had been warned early in life from my wise Father never to interfere or cheer. He really didn’t have to worry about me.

I am uncomfortable with loud voices, as well as hysterical accusations and any form of physical violence. Even in my youth, if I saw a confrontation in the vicinity where I was walking, I would cross to the other side of the street.

I am also acutely aware that this doesn’t speak well for my character. However, I am equally convinced that “there is always another way.”

I watched the pre-election coverage recently and remembered crossing the street to avoid ugliness. Because that is the only word that came to mind as I watched elected officials and celebrities of our amazing country indulge in ugly, childish ranting.

We worry about what our children read; what they view on the internet, and aim to keep their childish innocence protected. Shouldn’t we be equally concerned about the example supposedly educated, informed legislators and media personalities are projecting daily not only to the youth of the nation, but the entire world?

When did it become acceptable to lose control, vilify, and accuse in protest? Isn’t there a more civilized approach to disagreement?

I once believed there was, and that soon there would no longer be any reason to cross the street. Now I know I was wrong.

Today the Midterm elections are over, and the people once again have spoken.

It is my humble opinion that the majority of citizens in our country wish to return to the original concept of checks and balances. With their vote this year, hopefully, they have achieved that goal. Time, of course, will tell.

While waiting for the poll results the other evening, I wondered how many other people would wish to cross the street along with me if the national street fight continued.

I think I have my answer, America spoke on Tuesday, November 6..
