TWO SCHOOLS: CHANGING EDUCATION IN THE MASSAPEQUAS

My previous two blogs described the earliest schools in the Massapequas:  a wooden building, situated on an unpaved schoolyard, enlarged from one to two rooms in 1910 and located on Park Boulevard north of Merrick Road, and a brick building built in 1925 with several classrooms, indoor plumbing and heating, facing Massapequa Avenue and also north of Merrick Road. The earlier school had two teachers by 1920 with one Trustee. The newer building, opened in 1925, had four teachers, a Principal and a custodian and was overseen by a four-member school board.  The earlier school had 50 students in 1910, the newer school accommodated 76 students, as shown in the attached 1927 photo. That number grew steadily during the thirties and enormously after World War II, requiring significant additions to the school as well as the creation of a large and complex multi-school network. For now, enjoy the attached images and think back to the Massapequas about a century ago.
