The War of The

Words

It was the calculated choice of words that I found so incredibly distressing.

The carefully worded statement uttered was in such absolute contrast to the pictures flashing on the TV screen, that I sat dumbfounded.

'The …….. claimed responsibility;”. At the risk of defying Webster, I feel the selection of vocabulary creates an illusion that the vile perpetrators had authenticity. I cannot agree that the words spoken are appropriate in describing such total and absolute calculated savagery.

I love words and responsibility sounded totally inadequate for the carnage I was viewing on the London subway..

Far more honest are the words, blame, scorn, condemn, indict or censure in depicting the reality. People are dead; innocent men and woman are maimed for life in what was a deliberately orchestrated act of inhumanity.

Responsibility is hardly a suitable way to depict the very essence of evil in my opinion. Perhaps that’s where we all went wrong when the first signs of diabolicalness appeared. We have been afraid to speak the obvious truth with clarity rather than what is now known as political correctness.

Violent incidents, occurring more and more frequently in this era of utter monstrosity, are now carefully defined as acts of terrorism, The truth is they are uncivilized occurrences of evil, pure and simple.

Any deliberately planned incident of cruelty planned and carried out towards innocent victims should not have the luxury of being identified with verbal kid gloves. Portraying the horror that has taken place on a London rush hour subway train with carefully selected verbiage only shields the perpetrators from the censure they deserve.

The initiators of such heinous acts should not be allowed the privilege of “taking responsibility”. No, rather let’s identify them more truthfully and be absolutely accurate in recording their depravity along with the utter horror and the destruction of life they cause. Let this be the moment in history when the perpetrators are identified, not in lukewarm terms shielding them, but rather as villains and enemies of humanity.

Those who commit such acts do not deserve the kindness of subtle vocabulary cloaking a truth that can only be accurately described with four letters - evil. Evil is foul, vile, immoral and sinful and those who initiate the terror being felt more and more across our planet are guilty. Unless, of course, we are finally prepared to utter the almost archaic word, sinful

Any initiator of such carnage deserves to be indicted with the blame, censored for the horror, condemned for their savagery.

They do not deserve to be given the respect of being termed responsible. Let’s begin to use our words with absolute clarity in this very different world we all now inhabit. Language was not intended to be used as a shield when recording iniquity, but rather to precisely describe history..

This past week I sat in awe as I was privileged for the first time since the horrendous attack of 9/11 to listen to one of the few survivors speak. I rather doubt if this remarkable and courageous woman would have any difficulty in describing the perpetrators of that attack as evil, immoral or sinful.
