Wasn’t Born That Way
Remember when things were easy, and the flow of life gently propelled you like a tiny sea vessel coddled on a buoyant crescent wave embarking on what was sure to be an excellent adventure? Are you scratching your head, and wondering if I am referring to you?
St. Patrick was born in the fifth century in a time where people longed for more, sought guidance, and hoped for what could not be overtly expressed. Feeling lost and disconnected isn’t only part and parcel of today’s disjointed, divergent society. The nature of the Soul speaks in subtle whispers that usher us along on a specific course, most often unbeknownst to us that there is a purposeful plan in tow. Sometimes the journey is pleasant or uneventful, and other instances are besieged with pandemonium causing indelible imprints upon the tender Soul, and producing a new unforeseen direction. When a heart is kindled in such a manner, the results can be monumental with prolific dispersion into the wind to latch on to and furrow deep within others. This is St. Patrick’s story.

Born in Britain, the son of a deacon, and the grandson of a priest, one would have surmised a similar path for the young lad, but he, like many youth, was not an ardent devotee. Not to say that he didn’t believe, but the perilous circumstances were not conducive at this point, the forces of nature were not wailing yet, and the inevitable call of The Almighty was presently still.
At sixteen years old, he was captured by Irish pirates, and enslaved for six years. During this time as a shepherd, he felt God’s presence, which ignited an entrenched trail that would lead him to become a Christian missionary in the very land where he was imprisoned, Bishop of Ireland, “Apostle of Ireland,” and eventually canonized as a saint. He converted a pagan country to The Holy Trinity, baptized thousands, ordained priests to assist him and carry on after him. He was transformed, and left his mark.

Feeling a little adrift or completely capsized? Maybe it is part of The Lord’s plan. How is Jesus calling you? What evidence of disarray is bombarding your space or life? Do you need assistance sorting it out? This is the time to seek our Lord and Savior. St. Patrick’s Day falls in the middle of Lent – a period of reflection, repentance, and abstinence, and for those who wish to engage in some hoop-la –a day of customary foods, drinks, and festivities in his honor.
We are clay in our Maker’s Hands. Let Him knead you and shape you. A few pokes and pinches here and there (ouch, ouch!), and you will be exactly what He always envisioned. Recall, St. Patrick wasn’t born that way either.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!
Romans 12:2, “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.”
