Weigh in on West NIle Spraying

Do you take precautions around your home when the county sprays for West Nile Virus?

West Nile Virus has become an all-too-familiar problem in recent summers.

When a in Massapequa tested positive for the disease, Nassau County once again took steps to combat the problem.

On Monday, Nassau County announced that they will be for West Nile later this week.

While the health department says the risk of adverse health effects from sprying is minimal, they do make recommendations on how to minimize exposure, including:

  • Keeping  windows and doors shut, setting air conditioners to re-circulate and turning window fans off.
  • Keeping children's toys indoors.
  • Keeping pets indoors, as well as their food, water dishes and toys.
  • Covering fishponds during the spray period.
