Business Q&A: Companions Animal Hospital
Patch puts the questions to the folks that keep your dogs barking and cats meowing.

When you're an animal lover and your pet is sick, there probably isn't a more harrowing feeling in the world. For many, their pets are members of the family, and when they fall ill, nothing less then the very best of care will do.
Companions Animal Hospital, located at 1798 Merrick Road, has been helping sick and injured pets get back on their feet (or, rather, paws) for six years and counting.
Dr. Azra Marghoob, one of the dedicated veterinarians there, spoke to Patch about treating our fuzzy friends in the Merrick community.

Do you treat exotics such as reptiles and birds?
We do treat some birds, but usually when birds come into the vet, they’re very, very sick and typically we recommend going straight to an avian specialist. We have a vet in Huntington named Dr. Hofer who we refer usually exotics such as reptiles and birds to.
What kind of services do you offer as far as treatments?
We’re the animal’s general practitioner, so we provide annual wellness care. We do all the diagnostics, such as blood work and x-rays. We do dental care and elective surgeries such as spays and neutering. We’re a full-service hospital, we do everything. If a pet needs an advanced procedure, such as a hip replacement, we have a surgical specialist that we refer them to.
Also, if someone calls us after-hours, they can press a button and be connected with a 24-hour emergency hospital.
Do you offer care guidance for pet owners?
We really cater to educating and spending time with the client. The most important part of what we do is not only taking care of the pet, but explaining everything to the pet owner so they understand everything. It’s not just us, it’s the pet owner that’s maintaining that animal’s health.
What do you like the most about running a business in Merrick?
We love that the people in Merrick love their animals. It’s just is a pleasure to work with a community that takes care of their pets.
