Crossing Guard Struck By Accused Drugged Driver In Merrick Dies, Civil Servants’ Union Announces
The man was struck by a driver now charged DWI on Feb. 26. The driver has since pled not guilty to all charges.
MERRICK, NY. — John Miro, the Merrick crossing guard struck by an accused drugged driver on the morning of Feb. 26, died Friday from his injuries, the Nassau County Civil Service Employees’ Association announced Friday afternoon.
Miro was struck by a vehicle being driven by Queens resident Joshua Alvarado on the morning of Feb. 26, police previously said. In the aftermath of the crash, Alvarado was arrested and charged with second-degree vehicular assault, second-degree assault, driving while ability impaired (DWAI) by drugs and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, police said.
Alvarado pleaded not guilty to all charges Friday, Feb. 27, court documents show.

“John was struck while performing his duties protecting children in Merrick on February 26, 2026. John has passed away today from his injuries,” the civil servants’ union said Friday. “Crossing guards serve our communities with courage and dedication, standing in the roadway each day to keep our children safe. John answered that call of service, and his commitment will not be forgotten. CSEA Local 830 extends our heartfelt condolences to John’s family, friends, and his fellow crossing guards during this incredibly difficult time.”
Joining in the offering of condolences was County Executive Bruce Blakeman, who said flags would be flown at half staff in his memory.

“He was doing what he did every day — standing in the roadway to keep our children safe. Crossing guards serve with incredible courage and dedication, and John answered that call with commitment and selflessness,” Blakeman said. “His service to our community will never be forgotten. My prayers are with John’s family, friends, and his fellow crossing guards during this incredibly difficult time. May he rest in peace.”
