Coronavirus: Michael Cohen To Be Released From Prison

The federal Bureau of Prisons has been releasing some inmates early due to the new coronavirus outbreak.

OTISVILLE, NY — President Donald Trump's former personal attorney is going to be released early from prison due to the coronavirus pandemic. Michael Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison for tax evasion, campaign finance violations and other crimes.

The federal prison camp in Otisville, Orange County, where Cohen was serving his sentence, has 14 inmates and seven staff members who have tested positive for the new coronavirus, CNN reports.

The federal Bureau of Prisons has been releasing some medically vulnerable and nonviolent inmates, either furloughing their sentences or releasing them to home confinement, in response to the viral outbreak.

Cohen and the other inmates scheduled to be released were told they would have to be held in quarantine for 14 days before they would be allowed to go home where they would be under the supervision of federal probation officers, the New York Times said.

The president's former attorney was assigned in May 2019 to a minimum-security satellite camp apart from a nearby medium-security prison.
