Amazon Go Store Opens In Seattle With No Lines, No Cashiers

Amazon's newest innovation is a grocery store in Seattle without checkout lines.

SEATTLE, WA - Amazon is trying to destroy an age-old grocery store chore: waiting in line to check out. The Amazon Go convenience store in Seattle, which opened Monday, lets you just walk out the door with your goods.

No, it's not free. Rather than waiting in line for a human to scan your products, the store uses censors to track what you put in (or remove from) your cart.

"Our Just Walk Out Technology automatically detects when products are taken from or returned to the shelves and keeps track of them in a virtual cart. When you’re done shopping, you can just leave the store. Shortly after, we’ll send you a receipt and charge your Amazon account," the Seattle-based company said in a press release.

Amazon Go opened at 7 a.m. Monday in downtown Seattle, in the heart of Amazon's campus. The store has been open for months to Amazon employees only. Amazon Go resembles a Trader Joe's store, selling a limited number of higher-end groceries, produce, and prepared foods. The store is 1,800 square-feet, which is about the size of a two-bedroom home.

There are no cashiers inside Amazon Go, but the store does have a staff. Workers at the store stock shelves, make prepared food, and are available to help if you have questions.
