Man Killed In Car Crash Near Herald Square In Midtown

A 60-year-old man was killed Monday when his Ford Mustang collided with a truck near Herald Square in Midtown Manhattan, police said.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — A 60-year-old man was killed in a vehicle collision Monday near Herald Square in Midtown, according to police.

Around 8 a.m. Monday, police responded to a 911 call reporting a collision in the intersection of 34th Street and Sixth Avenue.

Police determined that a 33-year-old man driving a Western Star-brand truck was heading east on 34th Street when he hit a 2017 Ford Mustang, driven by the victim, which was traveling north on Sixth Avenue.

The Mustang driver, identified as Midtown East resident Robert Lavanant, was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A 57-year-old passenger in the Mustang was also taken to Bellevue in stable condition.

The truck driver stayed at the scene and police have not announced any charges. An investigation by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing, police said.
