Worker Dies After Being Hit By Falling Stone In Midtown: NYPD

Emergency responders rushed to East 50th Street Monday morning after receiving reports of a person trapped under scaffolding, the FDNY said.

MIDTOWN MANHATTAN — A construction worker died after being struck in the head by a falling object Monday morning while working on a Midtown Manhattan worksite, police and fire officials said.

Nelson Salinas, 51, was injured when a large piece of stone from the parapet of 311 East 50th St., near Second Avenue, collapsed just before noon, according to an FDNY spokesperson and Department of Building records.

Salinas was performing facade repairs on a scaffold when he was hit by the falling piece of stone, a city Department of Buildings spokesman said. The scaffold became unstable after he was hit but did not collapse, the spokesman said.

EMS rushed Salinas to NewYork-Presbyterian Hosptial in critical condition, an FDNY spokesman said. The worker was declared dead at the hospital, police said.

FDNY officials requested the Office of Emergency Management inspect safety conditions on the construction site shortly after the worker fell, DOB records show.

Salinas was a resident of the Ozone Park neighborhood in Queens, police said.
