Long Island Animal Rescuers Help Doe Stuck Behind School's Fence

Miraculously, the animal had no broken bones and was good to go, so the rescue team let her jump off.

ROCKY POINT, NY — A team of animal rescuers freed a 250lb doe that became wedged between two fences — one bordering a Long Island high school — on Wednesday morning.

Rocky Point School District officials called Strong Island Animal Rescue League and Yaeger’s Run Rescue Wednesday morning when they found the animal in between a fence behind Rocky Point High School's football field and a neighboring home.

Strong Island Animal Rescue arrived at about 9 a.m. and it's estimated that the doe had been stuck from just about dawn, said the group's founder Frankie Floridia.

Floridia and Lisa Yaeger began working immediately, and were able to cut the fence at an angle on the high school's side, so that it would be easier to free the doe.

With one small pull from Floridia, the doe was freed and took off in a jump with no problem.

Floridia, based on the North Shore of Brookhaven Town, is no stranger to rescuing deer and other wildlife. In the Fall, another doe was wedged in between a set of fences in Port Jefferson Station for about 18 hours. In the past year, his group has rescued a deer with a bucket stuck on its head in Long Island Sound and another entangled in Christmas lights.

That said, he urged caution if residents see any wildlife in need of help.

"If you see something, always give a call," he said, adding that law enforcement and rescue groups are always on hand. "Don't attempt to do it yourself."
