YAPHANK, NY — Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon’s office will be cracking down on illegal parking in handicapped spaces through New Year’s Day.

It is illegal to park, stand, or stop in a spot designated for people who hold a handicapped parking permit. Offenders can face a ticket and a fine between $50 and $150.

“The purpose of this enforcement is to act as a deterrent to the illegal use of handicap parking spots, which creates a particular hardship, especially during the holiday season, for the citizens of Suffolk County who actually have need of such spaces," Toulon said.
