50 Car Crashes Over 12-Hours In Nassau County: PD

MINEOLA, NY — A monster nor’easter slammed Long Island with blistering snow and heavy wind, keeping the Nassau County Police Department busy overnight and well into the afternoon on Monday.

Nassau police officers responded to 50 car crashes throughout the county as of 12 p.m., a police spokesman said. The number of crashes, which were logged in between 12 a.m. and 12 p.m., are considered a little higher than average for the county’s logs, a police spokesman said.

Police could not say how many of the crashes required emergency medical services. Northwell Health’s hospitals have seen “more ambulance calls than usual,” spokesman Jason Molinet said. However, it is unclear how many of the calls are related to car crashes because, according to Molinet, the health system does not track the cause of the injury.

Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and the town’s supervisors on Sunday encouraged residents to stay inside and avoid the roadways, warning of dangerous roadway conditions.

“If you could hunker down for the next day or two, I would highly recommend that you do that,” she said in a press briefing. Curran also warned that more traffic would hinder clean-up crews from removing snow from streets on county, towns, and villages.

“We are all asking you to stay off the roadway to keep yourself safe and to let us do our job,” she said.
