Luso American Cultural Center needs a helping hand

The Luso American Cultural Center of Brooklyn has serviced the Community since 1940 and it needs the Community's help

Founded in 1940, the Luso-American Cultural Center of Brooklyn has been located at 619 Henry St., Brooklyn, a former St. Paul's Lutheran Church (built in 1873) since 1948.

The presence of the Portuguese in New York can be traced back to the 17th century but according to the census, in 1940 there were 4,580 foreign born Portuguese residents of New York State, with nearly as many claiming birth in the United States to Portuguese ancestry. Of these foreign born immigrants approximately 1,000 lived in Brooklyn.

The Luso-American Cultural Center of Brooklyn served, for many decades, a community that was mainly centered around Court and Columbia Streets. Over the past decade, this community dwindled leading the Center to struggle.

Join the New York Portuguese Community in lending a hand to the iconic Luso American Cultural Center of Brooklyn!

In an effort to help, this Saturday, February 9th, a fundraiser will be taking place at the Portuguese American Center of Suffolk to help raise funds for a much needed new roof for this struggling Cultural Center that serviced many generations of New York Portuguese and, the local community.
