βNorth Hempstead is proud to offer our students a means of using their creativity in a way that benefits the environment,β said Supervisor Bosworth. βThe βTrashion Showβ helps teach our children about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling.β
Nearly 100 proud parents, friends and family members were in attendance at the event, as well as Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio. All of the students who entered the contest were eligible to participate in the show. The winners were selected by the North Hempstead Arts Advisory Committee based on the judging criteria.
βThe projects completed this year served as excellent examples of how items that we consider trash can be repurposed for other uses,β said Chief Sustainability Officer Erin Reilley. βLooking at all of this yearβs entries, we can see how items as overlooked as old newspapers, food packaging, and even bike tires can be turned intofunctional and wearable art.β
βThe Trashion Show is undoubtedly one of the most creative events youβll ever witness on Long Island, and weβre proud to be able to nurture the creative spirit of these children, while also supporting the Townβs continued effort to promote sustainability,β said Edward Paternostro, president and CEO of NEFCU, which sponsored and emceed this yearβs show.
This year, the winning pieces will be on display at an exhibit at the New York State Legislative Building in Albany during February, courtesy of Assemb. Michelle Schimel.
