15-Year-Old Girl Arrested In Fatal Stabbing Of Classmate: MVPD

Two teen girls were stabbed in a melee involving Mount Vernon students, following citywide celebrations honoring a sports championship.

MOUNT VERNON, NY — Police have arrested a 15-year-old Mount Vernon girl in connection with the killing of a 16-year-old classmate, following a citywide day of celebrations paying tribute to the accomplishments of the state champion high school basketball team.

The unidentified teen was placed under arrest late on Friday night, in connection with the fatal stabbing that happened a little before 4 p.m. on April 8, near Gramatan Avenue and East Prospect Avenue.

Detectives from the Mount Vernon Police Department were able to identify the suspect after reviewing video footage of the stabbing. The suspect was located and placed under arrest, with the help of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and the Westchester County Police Department Detective Division. She was held overnight in the Mount Vernon Police Department headquarters and has since been arraigned on charges of manslaughter in the first degree, felony attempted assault in the first degree and felony assault in the second degree.

"I am devastated and completely outraged," Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard said Friday evening, shortly after it became clear a day of community pride turned tragic. "We began our day celebrating the greatness and success of our youth and we ended it with a young life that has been taken by a senseless and inexcusable violence."

Police officials said no names are being released at this time due to the ages of those involved. The case will be handled in the Youth Part of the Westchester County Criminal Court.

A second 15-year-old victim was also stabbed several times during the fight, according to investigators. She was treated at Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

"This is a terrible tragedy and we mourn the loss of this young life that was taken far too early. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and the entire Mount Vernon community," Westchester County District Attorney Miriam Rocah said in a statement released on Saturday. “My Office is working closely with the Mount Vernon Police Department to support the victims’ families and investigate this case. We will have no further comment at this time.”
