43 Displaced After Massive Mount Vernon Fire

The fire had to be fought on both sides of the block.

A huge fire that broke out just before midnight Saturday on South Terrace Avenue destroyed two houses and damaged another, according to Black Westchester magazine.

The American Red Cross of Metro New York is providing assistance to those affected by the fire. 

Several teams of disaster responders including mental health professionals have provided assistance to 11 families comprised of 43 residents affected by the fire, Red Cross officials said.

A Red Cross shelter has been opened at the Mount Vernon Armory at 144 N 5th Ave. Food has has been served to all shelter residents, and ongoing care including food, drinks, health/emotional support, and long term care will be provided as additional support is needed. 

Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas thanked all the emergency responders and the fire departments that responded from neighboring communities.
