Gunman Arrested After Broad Daylight Shooting At Bodega: YPD

Investigators believe that the shooting on a Yonkers street was the result of a dispute "possibly related to group violence."

YONKERS, NY — Gunfire on the streets of Yonkers on a quiet Sunday afternoon resulted in the arrest of the man police say was responsible for the violence and one of his intended victims, police said.

On May 22, just after 2 p.m., Yonkers police were called to Oak Street at Elm Street after gunshots were reported. Officers learned that a gray Honda Civic may have been involved in the brazen daylight shooting.

Police found the unoccupied car nearby. Ballistic evidence, a .380 caliber discharged cartridge casing, was also recovered near Oak Street at Ash Street.

Investigators from the Major Case Squad and the Crime Scene Unit believe that a group of men were congregating in front of a bodega on Elm Street, when a gray Honda Civic pulled up to the group. A conversation took place between the driver and a member of the group, but then the Honda drove south on Oak Street and stopped before reaching Ash Street. The driver then jumped out of the car, displayed a handgun and fired one shot in the direction of the group. After firing, the shooter threw the handgun and sped away.

Police say one of the members of the group being targeted collected the discarded weapon after the shooter left, but before police arrived.

Miraculously, no one was hit and no injuries were reported. The fired shot struck a parked car.

The entire drama was captured on security footage. Investigators soon located the driver of the Honda, who has been identified as Thomas Gibson.

The 21-year-old was taken into custody within an hour of the shooting.

Investigators then turned their attention to identifying the member of the group who took the handgun used in the shooting. Miguel Negron was arrested two days later on May 24. The 32-year-old was charged with felony criminal possession of a weapon and felony tampering with physical evidence.

Investigators believe that the shooting was the result of a dispute between Gibson and the men in front of the store, "possibly related to group violence."

"Brazen acts of violence in our communities will be met with bold, swift action by the Yonkers Police; we will never tolerate behavior that endangers our residents and our kids," Commissioner Chris Sapienza said. "Let these arrests be a warning to other bad actors: you will be arrested and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Gibson was charged with attempted murder, felony attempted assault, felony criminal possession of a weapon and one count of felony reckless endangerment.

Both Gibson and Negron were arraigned in Yonkers Criminal Court and remanded to the custody of the Westchester County Jail. Gibson's next court date is scheduled for June 3. Negron's next court date is scheduled for June 9.
