MOUNT VERNON, NY — A Mount Vernon High School student will go to prison for the killing of a rival Mount Vernon student while the city celebrated a state championship.

She has been promised a sentence of three to nine years in state prison, Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced.

The defendant is scheduled to be sentenced on January 24. Although her identity has been widely reported by media outlets, neither the police, nor prosecutors have publicly identified her because of her age.

Earlier this year, on April 8, the whole city came out to honor the Mount Vernon High School Knights basketball team's state championship and undefeated season. However, shortly before 4 p.m., after the school celebration turned violent, the defendant stabbed Green, a Mount Vernon High School sophomore, in the abdomen with a knife on Gramatan Ave. in Mount Vernon. The victim was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where she was pronounced dead.

The Mount Vernon Police Department arrested the defendant later that evening in Dobbs Ferry, following an investigation, with assistance from the Westchester County Department of Public Safety and the FBI’s Westchester Safe Streets Task Force.

The defendant was also charged in connection with the stabbing of another teen at the scene of the incident. Under NYS law, at the time of the defendant’s plea, those additional charges were dismissed due to the defendant’s age.
