Mount Vernon Candidate Calls for National "Break the Chain" Movement

CD 16 Congressional candidate, Derickson K. Lawrence calls for a national movement to "Break the Chain" of mass incarceration.

April 27, 2016 - Mount Vernon, NY ---When a system sends one in four African American males to prison and denies so many the opportunity of the American dream that system is broken. In New York, Hispanics/Latinos are five times more likely to be incarcerated than whites and African Americans are even nine times more likely.

“As an immigrant with humble roots who has made Mount Vernon my home, this is personal,” said Derickson K. Lawrence, candidate for U.S. Congress in the 16th Congressional District. “Investors in private corporations (Industrial Prison Complex) should not be benefiting from poor choices of non-violent drug offenders.”

“It’s about all of us; we need a national movement to break the chain of mass incarceration, and create opportunities for jobs and regional economic empowerment,” he said.

WHO: A coalition of civic organizations and prominent citizens speaking on the unfairness and injustice of the criminal justice system and the need to repeal related or applicable federal laws.
