MVPD Issues Warning To Hyundai And Kia Car Owners In The City
Because certain models lack an engine immobilizer, 2012 to 2021 models are easily stolen, even without a key, according to police.
MOUNT VERNON, NY — Police in Mount Vernon say that a flaw that can make certain cars highly susceptible to theft now has a solution, but that solution only works if car owners take advantage of a voluntary update recall.
Because certain models lack an engine immobilizer, 2012 to 2021 Hyundais and Kias are easily stolen, even without a key, according to police. Hyundai and Kia have come up with a solution and millions of owners will need to have the update done at a dealership.
Law enforcement officials have said the the ease with which the cars are stolen not only stretches police time investigating the thefts, but the cars stolen often end up being used in the commission of another, even more dangerous crime. Some jurisdictions, including New York City, have taken the unusual step of suing the Korean automakers over the security issues that they say has created a public nuisance.

"As of February 2023, Kia has developed theft deterrent software for millions of their vehicles that lack an immobilizer and will provide it for free to all affected vehicle owners," the carmaker said in a statement. "This update includes an adjustment to the theft alarm software logic to extend the length of the alarm sound from 30 seconds to one minute and also requires the key to be in the ignition switch in order to turn the vehicle on. This update recall is offered free of charge and is only available at Authorized Kia Dealerships. You can call our Emich Kia Service staff or use our online portal to schedule a service appointment for the free upgrade."
Mount Vernon police are asking Kia owners to call (800) 333-4542 and Hyundai owners to call (800) 699-5151 for more information on the update needed.
